CHAPTER 01 — ORIGIN

Founded in 2017 by engineers who had already built city-scale geospatial systems — and decided they could no longer watch city halls wait eighteen months for a planning answer.

Bakrabata was incorporated in Boston in March 2017 by a small group of geospatial engineers who had spent the previous decade inside two very different institutions: Palantir's forward-deployed geospatial practice, and the MIT Senseable City Lab. Between them they had shipped decision-support systems for transit authorities, port operators, and national mapping agencies — but kept arriving at the same conclusion. The municipal stack, where the consequences of slow planning are most acute, was being asked to make do with 1990s GIS workflows bolted onto brittle data feeds.

The founding premise was deliberately narrow: if you could fuse LiDAR, Sentinel-2 satellite tiles, municipal IoT, and permitting registries into a single queryable layer — and do it on a public-sector timeline — you could give Chief Sustainability Officers and Smart City Directors an operating system for the city that actually existed this morning, not the one a static map insisted on.

Eight years later, that premise has become a platform: 142 employees, 38 of whom hold PhDs in remote sensing, urban planning, or applied machine learning; engineering offices in Boston, Lisbon, and Singapore; and 87 deployed municipal clients from Lyon to Rotterdam to the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore.

“We didn't start a SaaS company. We started by watching city planners wait nine months for an answer a satellite had already given them.”
— Founding note, Bakrabata internal memo, February 2017

CHAPTER 02 — PEOPLE

Researchers and operators, not career SaaS executives.

The principals are recognized for the specific geospatial discipline they command — academic lineage, prior operational responsibility, and the deployments that justify the credential.
